DIY Kids Sushi Plate: Vegetarian

Sushi doesn’t have to be daunting. All you need is a little rice and seaweed, which we always have on hand. And veggies of your choice. It doesn’t have to be fancy either. Usually, I do like to make real sushi rolls, but sometimes this DIY kids sushi plate will suffice. Not to mention, it’s cute. Not only does cutting food into shapes make all the difference to a kid, it makes eating more fun. In essence, this dish is toddler-approved. Kid-approved. And grown-up approved. Yup, my husband eats this too.

As you can see, today, I went all vegetarian. I just chopped up some avocado, cucumber and seaweed. To make the panda rice, I used a rice mold which you can find here. I also chopped up some mango for dessert. The fruit and veggie cutters you can find here.

Finally, the rest was up to Els. For instance, today, she wrapped the rice and avocado into the seaweed and munched on the cucumbers on the side. Next, she took a bit of her mango before going back to eating her kids sushi all over again.

Occasionally, I add some egg, daikon radish and carrots in there too. Again, whatever you have on hand works!

DIY sushi plate for kids: Vegetarian


  • Brown or White Sushi Rice
  • Avocado
  • Cucumber
  • Unsalted roasted Seaweed - for the eyes and mouth
  • Roasted, salted seaweed
  • Mango (optional)


  1. Cook rice in a rice cooker until done.
  2. Scoop rice into panda rice mold and press down. Carefully press the sides of the mold to release the rice onto plate.
  3. For the eyes and mouth - use unsalted seaweed and press down into the panda mold punch.
  4. Place the seaweed pieces onto the rice. (The seaweed will stick to the rice on its own)
  5. Chop up Avocado and cucumber. Use fruit/veggie cutters into fun shapes.
  6. Cut roasted, salted seaweed into small rectangular or square shapes with scissors.
  7. Wrap rice with veggies in the seaweed and enjoy!
